BDC Markets Are Questioning Valuations
The bond and equity markets are sending different signals about BDCs.

The bond and equity markets are sending different signals about BDCs.

Recent PIMCO research finds that BDC bonds have recovered much of their relative underperformance while BDC equities continue to lag. PIMCO argues that the divergence reflects, in part, increasing investor scrutiny of reported portfolio values and NAVs.

The issue is particularly relevant in private credit because many underlying loans don’t trade in liquid public markets. Valuations therefore depend substantially on valuation processes and manager judgment.

PIMCO also finds that the economics of new BDC lending have changed. Its analysis indicates that the spread advantage of direct-lending transactions over broadly syndicated loans has fallen from more than 300 basis points for 2017–2018 originations to less than 100 basis points by Q1 2026.

Why It Matters

The market may be asking two different questions at once.

Bond investors are primarily evaluating the likelihood of being repaid. Equity investors also have to consider what the underlying portfolio is worth—and how reliable reported NAV may be as an anchor for that value.

For advisors, that reinforces a basic due-diligence principle: don’t stop at the reported NAV or distribution rate. Valuation methodology, portfolio credit quality, non-accruals and manager-specific marks can all help provide a fuller picture.

Blue Vault’s standardized data helps put those individual metrics into comparative context across BDCs.
